TRUCKS AND DIESEL CONSUMPTION

The haulage industry in Nigeria is faced with so many challenges, and one of the challenge is allocation of fuel (diesel) to trucks. It is more difficult for truck owners ...

who do not have a “controlled” diesel disbursement mechanism (e.g having their own diesel tanks), do not know the geography of the truck’s route, do not know the specific diesel allocation for a specific destination (e.g Oregun, Lagos State — Ibadan, Oyo State). If you fall into these categories, then it simply means your drivers have being feeding fat on your ignorance, and to make matters worse your profit has being unconsciously depleted.
Diesel allocation to trucks is a function of so many factors, these factors includes but not limited to:
  1. The nature of the truck (i.e is it a brand new truck or a used one)?
  2. Operational time frame of truck (a used truck that has being in operation for more than 3 yrs will definitely consume more fuel unless the engine is changed)
  3. The tonnage of the truck (the higher the tonnage, the higher the fuel)
  4. The nature of engine i.e is it a manual engine with injector or is it an electrical engine with rotor and nozzle? etc
For example a 15 tonnes truck travelling from Oregun, Lagos State to Ibadan, Oyo State which is 118km (according to Google map) will consume 130 litres of diesel but for an engine that consumes more diesel due to reduced engine efficiency just add 10 litres to it that makes it 140 litres , then it is good to go!
Diesel charting is very key for a potential haulage practitioner if they intend to make the desired profit. It helps to control diesel allocation, it helps in profit projection and planning irrespective of the diesel price.
