Most recent is the death of a top government official under the President Muhammadu Buhari Administration in the name of late Barrister James Ocholi (SAN) the Minister for State for labour and employment who lost his life and that of family members as a result of a tyre blowout on the high-way. May his soul rest in peace.
Here are the 7 basic steps to take when faced with
a tyre burst or blowout on the express way:
1.
AVOID
PANIC
It is natural to want to panic when you realize what
just happened, please DON’T, calm yourself down and take CHARGE of the car.
2.
DO
NOT RESPOND TO THE NOISE OR PANIC FROM THE PASSENGERS
If you indeed want to safe the lives of those
passengers or family members who are shouting and making all sorts of noise
please IGNORE THEM and concentrate on how you will get the vehicle to safety.
3.
HOLD
FIRMLY TO YOUR STEERING WITH BOTH HANDS
Do not turn the car steering ANYHOW, concentrate
on the road and your mirror. Try studying the movement pattern of your car,
your car will eventually swerve to the direction of the burst tyre.
4.
GRADUALLY
TAKE YOUR FOOT OF THE ACCELERATOR
Please do not try to press the BRAKE! If you do it
is very DANGEROUS because your car will most likely SOMERSAULT. However, by
taking your foot off the accelerator, the car will DECELERATE gradually while
you concentrate on the road to avoid collision with any other road users.
5.
DISENGAGE
THE GEAR OF THE CAR
Try to disengage the gear of the car by putting it
to NEUTRAL as you still maintain a FIRM grip on the steering wheel and focus on
the road.
6.
GRADUALLY
APPLY BRAKE
After a while, your car will decelerate to a speed
of less than 50km/hr, this is now safe to gradually apply your brake and turn
to the side walk.
7.
SAFE
TO STOP THE CAR
By now, it is safe to put your car into a complete
STOP by turning off the engine. By now you can thank God for His mercy and also
decide to greet each or accord blames to each other!
However,
the most important RULE is DO NOT OVER SPEED!
