Apapa port commences electronic call-up systems for Trucks

I was delighted to read an online news medium on January 23rd, 2021 that the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) has commenced the use of the electronic call-up systems for trucks in a bid to find a permanent solution to the problem of truck congestion around Apapa ports and its environs. The electronic system is meant achieve a easy, a more coordinated accessibility of trucks in a uniform and timely pattern into the various terminals to load cargoes and containers to and from Apapa and Tin-Can ports.

According to Mr. Nasiru Ibrahim, Assistant General Manager, Corporate and Strategic Communications department of the NPA “ all trucks doing business at the ports will be required to park at the approved truck parks until they are called up into the port through the Eto app”.

Part of the statement reads: “Therefore, all transporters, trucks owners and truck drivers will be required to download the Eto App from Google play store or sign up at http://eto.ttp.com.ng before the commencement date to enable them register accordingly. “In addition to this, cargo owners are advised to ensure that empty containers can only be returned to the ports through the approved holding bays of shipping companies using the App. “It is the responsibility of the shipping company to move empty containers from their holding bay to the Port. All cargo owners have to do is drop their empty containers at the holding bay of the shipping company. “The shipping company will then make the necessary bookings on the Eto platform to return empty containers to the Port. “The management of the NPA solicits the cooperation of transporters, truck drivers, cargo owners, clearing agents, shipping companies and all port users in the implementation of the project, which will bring order and sanity to the ports access roads.

My Take

This is a good initiative that we have being clamoring for a longtime. However apart from the automation, the FGN should also look into making the roads more “truckable” year in year out around the ports. There is a need to educate and increase awareness amongst stakeholders for easy compliance. Road expansion/construction within the corridor is also very important in the medium to long term due to the projected increase in activities around the ports. The development of other ports and construction of newer ones across the country will help to de-congest the Apapa and Tin-Can ports and at the same time increase the IGR of the government .

Many thanks for reading as always
